NDCPD Past Projects

The North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities at Minot State University conducts a wide range of projects serving the disability community. Many of these projects are funded through grants and contracts with outside agencies. NDCPD projects are listed below. Education & Early Intervention Projects

Preparing Interdisciplinary Early Intervention in Rural States (PIEIRS)

This project provides interdisciplinary early intervention training for personnel to serve infants, toddlers, and young children with low-incidence disabilities and their families. Stipends are available for trainees to complete university courses.

 

Rural Special Education Strategist (RSES)

 

This project prepares new teachers for the ND credential in special education strategist and will alleviate a mild disabilities teacher shortage in central and western ND. In addition to the strategist credential, teachers are prepared to serve as rural special education leaders in their school districts.

 

MSU Resident Teacher Program

 

This project is a collaborative effort to recruit, mentor and retain special education teachers in rural communities in North Dakota.

 

Leaps & Bounds

 

This project increased community awareness for parents, highlighting the abilities of children with disabilities, and collaborated with existing programs to provide support and technical assistance to instructors.

 

Employment Related Projects

Employment Expansion Effort

The purpose of this project is to place persons with disabilities into part-time positions across the Minot State University campus to provide needed assistance to departments/colleges while providing employment for persons with disabilities in the local area.

 

Survey Fusion

 

This project is an online data entry system. Survey Fusion is an online service of NDCPD that enables people with moderate and severe disabilities to hold competitive employment in the data entry industry.

 

North Dakota Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (NDMIG)

 

NDCPD established a collaborative agreement with the Medical Services Division of the ND Department of Human Services to conduct the ND Medicaid Infrastructure Grant (NDMIG) to support competitive employment of people with disabilities. ND was approved $500,000 from the Health Care Financing Administration over a period of one year with the potential of funding for three additional years.

 

Health Related Projects

Healthy Communities International: Tobacco Education, Research and Policy (TERPP)

This project provides education, research, and policy consultation on tobacco prevention and control.

 

Real Choice Systems Change Grant - Rebalancing Initiative

 

The purpose of this grant is to take an in-depth look at the long-term care system in North Dakota. This project will result in a plan and potential legislation for rebalancing resources and developing a statewide mechanism for single point of entry to all long-term care services.

 

Rural Disabilities Wellness Project

 

This project increased the level of physical activity in adults who have developmental disabilities. This project developed and implemented a telehealth model for improving physical fitness and wellness among adults with developmental disabilities living in rural community facilities.

 

Tri City CARES Project

 

This project provided behavioral consultation for adults with developmental disabilities in a community group home setting.

 

Health Services Guidelines

 

The purpose of this project is to develop a user-friendly manual that addresses school health issues. Most schools in ND do not have immediate access to a school nurse, often support staff within the school administer care to students during the school day. The manual will include flow chart for quick reference of procedures to follow, a narrative section with more detail, and reference sites. The manual will be distributed to schools across ND by the Health Department.

 

Quality Assurance Projects

North Dakota Protection and Advocacy Consumer Satisfaction Survey

This project conducts an ongoing consumer satisfaction survey for the ND Protection and Advocacy Program. NDCPD also provides technical assistance to P&A in the development of the consumer satisfaction and data management tools as well as technical assistance in using the resulting data.

 

North Dakota Infant Toddler Enrichment Program (ND ITEP)

 

This project seeks to compile and analyze descriptive data, develop instrumentation and methodology, and implement activities to evaluate the impact of training and consultation methods used as part of the Infant/Toddler initiative.

 

DPI Student Population Trends

 

This project studied the trends and current statistics of the ND special education population.

 

ND Educational Services Improvement (ND-ESI)

 

North Dakota's Department of Public Instruction (ND-DPI) and the Department of Human Services (DHS) wished to change its role in ND's Part B and Part C monitoring and improvement system. This project will result in a new model of focused interactive activities that will continuously improve ND's Part B and Part C services. ND-ESI developed a model of consolidated/coordinated educational service improvement processes that resulted in more efficient and effective methods to ensure quality outcomes for infants, toddlers and youth with disabilities.

 

Quality of Life Projects

Help America Vote Act Educational Grant (HAVA)

This project will educate individuals with disabilities, specifically individuals with developmental disabilities, on the voting process in North Dakota.

 

Youth Leadership

 

This project plans and hosts an annual Youth Leadership conference which promotes leadership to students with disabilities.

 

North Dakota Family Support Project II

 

This project worked with ND families by creating opportunities to advise policymakers on supports that families need to successfully raise children with special needs and chronic health conditions. The project produced newsletters; held collaborative conferences for families and professionals, created new training materials, surveyed families about their satisfaction with services and gave families and policymakers information and data about the outcomes of family support services in North Dakota.

 

Recreation Projects

Planning Leisure Activities for Young Children (PLAY)

This project has developed training and tools to help families and recreation providers include young children (birth to eight) with disabilities access recreation and leisure activities in Minot (year 2) and surrounding communities (year 2). Training on inclusive recreation is available for providers. Individualized family support is available to help families connect and get their child enrolled. The project has helped to organize recreation providers and address their needs in providing individualized recreation services.

 

Other/Cultural Diversity Projects

Cross Cultural Education Program in Indian/Deaf Culture (CC EPIC)

This project replicated NDCPD's EPIC model, an experiential activity for teaching American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf culture and the Northern Plains Indian culture. The project replicated the EPIC program with four different minority cultures: Native American (South Dakota), Native Hawaian (Hawaii), and African American (Virginia).

 

Other/Assistive Technology Projects

Flatlands Disability Network

The Flatlands Disability Network (FDN) is a dedicated high speed data network linking the disability service providers, consumer groups, and disability advocacy groups of North Dakota.

 

Other/Leadership Projects

North Dakota One Stop

This project is designed to create a statewide plan for implementing one-stop service delivery to families of children with both intellectual disabilities and mental illness. Families raising children with co-occurring systems come into contact with multiple systems and require intensive levels of support for children and families across the life span. Professionals are often familiar with either developmental disabilities or mental health challenges but seldom both. The project is designed to access current research on individualized planning, technology, funding, training and coordination and will result in a series of options for system improvement that will be reviewed and acted on by the ND Department of Human Services.

 

Disability Justice Initiative II

 

The purpose of this project is to improve interactions between the state's criminal justice system and North Dakotans who have disabilities.

 

Other Projects

Program Fusion

Program Fusion is an Internet-Based service which service provider agencies can subscribe to. It will allow NDCPD personnel to update all record files for programs, jobs, or medications/general health issues.
